Hello ,

I hope you enjoyed the last newsletter where we discussed the importance, and potential profit to be enjoyed, of building your own opt-in email list. If you haven't read it yet you can see it here.

Of course, it's one thing to realise the importance of building your list and another to know how to do it. In fact there are a number of different ways that you can do this but the common features are:

  • · A simple one page website to capture names and email addresses.
  • · An autoresponder to send out pre-loaded messages automatically.
  • · Some method of driving traffic to your website.
  • The website should be very simple and should just contain a few bullet points on the benefits. You've already seen the one I use for this website but you can click here if you want to refresh your memory. I use very similar sites for other lists that I run and they are very successful.
  • Click here to see a further example. As you can see, it's practically the same – but why change a winning formula?

Your autoresponder should be loaded with between 5 and 9 informative emails. The messages should provide your subscribers with something of value and you should use the "broadcast" facility of the autoresponder system to send out weekly, fortnightly or monthly newsletters (or you can use other specialist software if you prefer).

With those two elements in place, the only thing you have to do is drive traffic to your simple lead capture website. This can be easier said than done – you only have to look at all the articles and websites dedicated to traffic generation to realise that this is not only a hot topic but a major problem for many online businesses.

However, there is a simple way to get traffic and get signups – and you may be surprised, or even sceptical at what I'm about to reveal. Traffic exchanges can be a very efficient way to grow your opt-in list.

Now there are many people who will be happy to tell you that traffic exchanges don't work. However, this is not the case. When used properly traffic exchanges represent a very cost effective method of getting signups and generally doing business online.

And it's certainly true that traffic exchanges will not work well for certain types of campaign. For example, there is little point in promoting affiliate programs using the exchanges. This type of campaign usually requires people to stop what they're doing (surfing and racking up credits for their website) and take some action. It is also unlikely that anyone will make a buying decision based upon the typical 15 to 30 second view of a website on a traffic exchange.

However, people will be willing to take the time to enter their name and email address on your lead capture page – especially if you're giving something away free, such as free information in the form of an email report or a free e-book.

This can be very effective and it's possible to get double digit signups daily using this method. Once you've obtained a prospect's email address and have built up a relationship with them via your messages then you can introduce them to your affiliate programs or whatever product you are promoting.

You will enjoy a much better conversion rate using this approach. And if they don't bite at the first offer so what? Keep sending them useful business information interspersed with suitable product and service offers and they may buy something in future.

The system that I use is described in the recruitment section of www.perfectsystem.co.uk and it works very well.

In all probability, you are already using traffic exchanges. If not, there is a small sample here which you can look at to get started – there are many more but these are just a few that I have found to be responsive.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the most responsive of all the exchanges is Traffic Swarm. If you're already a member then congratulations, you know a good thing when you see it! If not then you can join free here.

The next newsletter will contain details about how to organise your autoresponder messages for maximum impact and return.

    Enjoy your weekend.

    Best Regards,

    Hamish Hayward
